The most common cause of irregular liver function in the US is now attributed to a fatty liver.  Shockingly, 1 in 5 Americans and Australians suffers from fatty liver disease.  But what exactly is a fatty liver?  It is a condition in the liver that causes it to retain excess fats.  Some fat in the liver is normal, but if it accounts for more than 10% of your liver’s weight, there is a concern.  Fatty liver can be a result of obesity, excessive alcohol intake, insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Because the symptoms are vague and non-specific, most people who suffer from a fatty liver are unaware that they even have a problem. Symptoms include:

  • Extra weight in the abdominal area
  • Increased cholesterol levels
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Unexplained sweating
  • Irritated and itchy eyes
  1. Less carbohydrates:

An imbalanced diet is the leading cause of fatty liver disease.  Sugars and white flour are the most dangerous and should be avoided at all costs.

  1. Cut out the alcohol

Excessive alcohol intake can cause inflammation to the liver’s cells; cutting back is good but completely eliminating alcohol from your diet is the best option.

  1. More veggies, protein and healthy fats

Raw fruits and veggies, proteins and healthy fats are like medicine for your liver.  Their nutrients help to cleanse and mend your liver; this makes it easier for your liver to perform its functions.

  1. Juicing

Juicing, especially vegetables, is a great source of raw and highly concentrated vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.  Your juice should contain no more than 20% fruit juice because it is high in carbohydrates and sugars.

  1. Take liver tonic

Liver tonic is a supplement that helps to cleanse your liver; it can facilitate the repair of damaged liver tissues and aid in the detoxing that takes place in the liver.
