Hold off on the sugar

Foods with a lot of sugar are high in calories and can lead to weight gain, which is a big factor in colon cancer. Sugary foods are also low in fiber, which is essential to a healthy colon.

Increase your fiber intake

As stated previously, a high-fiber diet is good for your intestinal and colon health. Fruits and vegetables such as raspberries, apples, pears, oranges, bananas, artichoke, peas, broccoli and corn are all high in fiber. Fiber is important because it keeps bowel movements regular and prevents constipation. This lowers your risk for hemorrhoids and small pouches on your colon.

Limit red meat

Every 100 grams of red meat can increase the risk of cancer by 15 to 20 percent according to the ACS. It okay to eat a bit of it, about two four ounce servings per week will be fine. But it is also important to steer clear of processed meat so make sure you know how the meat was raised before you buy it.

Got Milk?

Calcium and vitamin D can decrease the risk of colon cancer. Do not however increase your calcium intake above recommended amounts because that can increase the risk of prostate cancer (don’t exceed 2,000 milligrams a day). Other than milk, leafy greens such as spinach, kale, and collard greens are high in calcium. Depending on your age about 1,000 to 1,300 milligrams of calcium is the perfect amount.

Which grains to eat

It is recommended that adults eat at least half of their grains as whole grains. Whole grains contain all their essential parts and nutrients. Barley, quinoa, whole wheat four, wild and brown rice and oatmeal are all whole grains you can choose from. These grains contain more minerals, fiber, and antioxidants than refined grains like white four and white rice.
