Current scientific research indicates a dramatic increase in the soil levels of glyphosate, a chemical that is believed to increase risks of celiac disease, autism, and Alzheimer’s. This additive is commonly found in the very popular herbicide Roundup, and its increasing levels in farm soil directly mimic the dramatic rise in GMO (Genetically Engineered Organisms) crops over the past fifteen years. Glyphosate is used primarily to decrease the amount of residue found on harvested crops while also helping to proactively reduce weed growth for the coming year.

The Dangers of Glyphosate

Dr. Stephanie Seneff from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has been involved in an ongoing research study investigating the relationship between glyphosate and numerous diseases and medical disorders. Although her findings are not yet conclusive, she believes that glyphosate acts as a type of transportation mechanism for aluminum to the brain and for arsenic to the kidneys. These are two conditions that are known to potentially lead to autism and other diseases.

Glyphosate Furthermore, glyphosate consumption is known to cause damage to the intestinal flora, potentially leading to increased risks of certain digestive disorders. For example, celiac disease occurs in patients who develop a very severe reaction to gluten. According to the study, the rise in celiac disease cases is perfectly in-step with the escalating use of glyphosate, especially on wheat crops but also on soy and corn products to a lesser degree. Since a large number of processed foods are made from glyphosate-contaminated wheat, this might explain the alarming increase in celiac disease.

The Future of GMOs

Chemicals used in fertilizers and herbicides are largely regulated by US government agencies, and Dr. Seneff is growing increasingly more alarmed at the US government’s unwillingness to acknowledge the direct connection between GMO’s and disease. She notes that countries like China and Russia have already take drastic measures to reduce their dependency on GMO foods.   She is dedicated to increasing awareness of these farming tactics that she believes is essentially poisoning and killing millions of Americans. Seneff estimates that if we continue on this current course, the United States will witness a massive surge in celiac disease, autism, and Alzheimer’s disease within the next ten to fifteen years.
