For a long time it was believed that the causes of gastric ulcers were diet and stress. This was recently disproven with the discovery that 70-90% of stomach ulcers were in fact caused by a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). Usually the high acid content of the stomach does not allow bacteria to survive.  H. pylori is unique because it has a defense mechanism against this acid which not only allows it to survive, but enables it to cause significant damage.

It is estimated that about 50% of the world’s population – with the highest concentration in developing countries – have H. pylori living in their stomach. Many people who have the infection actually experience no symptoms at all. Only 10-15% of those with the bacteria will develop peptic ulcers. The common symptoms of H. pylori include:

  • Bloating
  • Abdominal pain
  • Burping
  • Heartburn

The good news is that H. pylori is treatable!  A course of antibiotic treatment, known as triple therapy, may be used. Triple therapy is the combination of two antibiotics and a stomach acid reducer (such as Prilosec or Nexium). Additional medications to soothe the stomach (such as Pepto Bismol) can be added to this regimen. Triple therapy has been shown to be a successful treatment option.

The exact nature of how the bacterium is spread is unknown, but it is believed to be through food and water. It is also believed that most people contract the bacteria during childhood.
