Colorectal cancer is the third most common form of cancer affecting Americans.

Every year about 140,000 people will be diagnosed with the cancer and if not treated the cancer can be fatal. Luckily, colorectal cancer is highly preventable and there are many steps that one can take to help mitigate the development of colorectal cancer. Below are six steps to take in order to help prevent colorectal cancer.

1) Get Regular Cancer Screenings

The most important measure one can take to prevent colorectal cancer is to get regular cancer screenings. In a screening for colorectal cancer, a doctor can identify abnormal growths (polyps) in the intestines and treat them before they become cancerous and spread. People with a family history of colorectal cancer should get tested for the disease early, but for the average American it is recommended that one go in for colorectal cancer screenings at age 50. The testing process includes a blood test and a colonoscopy to check for polyps.

2) Watch Your Weight

Colorectal cancer has been linked to obesity. Maintaining a healthy weight will decrease one’s chances of developing the disease. One can maintain a healthy weight through regular physical fitness and a healthy diet.

3) Limit Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol is fine in moderation, but too much alcohol can have a negative effect on the body. Consuming too much alcohol can put a strain on the liver and increase one’s chances of developing colorectal cancer.

4) Don’t Smoke

Likewise, smoking can increase the risk of developing all forms of cancer. The tar from cigarettes can clog up veins and weaken various organs. Cutting out smoking will help to prevent the development of cancer.

5) Limit Processed Meats

Processed meat and red meat can have a negative effect on the colon if it is over-consumed and can lead to an increased risk of developing colorectal cancer. Stick to a diet full of leafy greens, lean meats, fish, and other foods loaded with minerals, fiber, protein and healthy fats.

6) Take Daily Vitamins

Vitamins such as Vitamin A, B, C, D etc. are important for maintaining a healthy immune system and keeping the body resistant to various forms of cancer and other deadly diseases. Taking a daily vitamin can keep the body healthy and the digestive system regular.
