Colon cancer is one of the five most common cancers that are easily preventable. Dedicated to International Men’s Health week, our health center will be focusing on preventative care for colon cancer with these seven tips:

1. Visit A Physician

Colon cancer is the third most common type of cancer in the U.S. The best way to prevent colon cancer is to take as many precautions as possible. Visiting a physician is extremely important as abnormal growths, or polyps can be treated if found early on. We recommend individuals begin to get screened starting from the age of 45. Individuals with a family history of colon cancer should start getting screened at an earlier age.

2. Maintain A Healthy Weight

Being overweight raises the risk of any type of cancer. 10-11 cancers have been linked to obesity. Individuals should try to maintain a healthy weight as this can help prevent cancer as well as give you a health boost.

3. No Smoking

Smoking causes a lot of health concerns in an individual, with a higher risk of cancer being one of them. Additionally, they also run the risk of other diseases such as stroke, heart disease, and emphysema. If you are having a difficult time quitting, speak to a doctor as they may have alternatives to help you quit.

4. Stay Physically Active

Staying physically active helps to lower the risk of a lot of diseases, colon cancer being one of them. Try to be active for about 30 minutes each day, with mild to moderate exercise. To make it easier to stay active, try to do things you enjoy such as walking, dancing, gardening, etc.

5. Drink Moderately

Alcohol may be fun, but it also provides a lot of health risks. Drink alcohol in moderation as it has the potential to increase cancer in low levels. We recommend no more than one drink per day for women, and two drinks per day for men.

6. Limit Red Meat

Red meats, such as pork or beef, are known to increase the risk of colon cancer. Avoid red and processed meats. Individuals should aim to eat less than three servings a week.

7. Get Some Vitamin D & Calcium

Calcium and Vitamin D are vital in helping protect individuals against colon cancer. 1,000 to 1,200 milligrams and 1,000 IU’s of Vitamin D should be sufficient enough. It is important to get a test for any Vitamin D deficiency’s you may have, to help prevent further health concerns.
